Dreaming of snow-free hydrants

| December 24, 2021 1:00 AM

The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department wants residents to “Adopt a Hydrant.”

"As the snow continues to fall and our temperatures change from cold, to warmer, to very cold next week we ask that citizens take a few extra minutes while shoveling to ensure that your neighborhood fire hydrant is also clear and accessible for the fire department," said a press release.

It could mean a difference in protecting a home.

"During a structure fire every minute counts for our ability to save a structure from complete destruction, and water is our best weapon," the release said.

Residents who live near a fire hydrant are asked to take time to clear out a space 3 feet in diameter around it.

Now would be a good time.

"We would advise doing this now before we get the extreme cold forecasted next week which will make it extremely difficult once the snow freezes solid," the release said.

Once the snow freezes or the berms from snow plows cover hydrants, it will take time and manpower for crews to locate and dig them out for use.

"A bit of extra time now could make the difference for you or your neighbor if the fire department needs a hydrant," the release said.

People are welcome to share photos of their clear fire hydrants to the fire department's Facebook page, or email them to cetherton@cdaid.org. Prizes may be involved.
