PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City on to semis in Vegas

| December 19, 2021 1:15 AM

LAS VEGAS — One day after winning a fast-paced game, the Lake City Timberwolves slowed it down, with the same result.

Lake City held Lynwood (Calif.) to 30 points in a 55-30 victory on Saturday at Durango High in the quarterfinals of the Diamond Bracket at the Tarkanian Classic.

“It was kind of our goal to slow them down,” said Lake City coach James Anderson, whose team won 81-71 on Friday. “We thought they would really struggle with a zone defense. They looked like they came to a halt, so we stuck with it the whole game. We’re a little undersized so we have to get creative.”

Junior Emberlyn Reynolds scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half for Lake City (12-0).

“She was awesome in the second half,” Anderson said of Reynolds, who finished with 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Avery Waddington added 13 points and six steals, Soph Sophia Zufelt nine points and six steals, senior Kendall Pickford six assists.

“Avery Waddington was really disruptive in the zone,” Anderson said. “We had Sophia and Avery at the top of a 2-3 zone and both got a lot of steals.”

After making 18 3-pointers on Friday, Lake City managed just three on Saturday, but made up for it with defense.

Junior Jaushylynn Ruffin led Lynwood (1-5) with 10 points.

After a day off today, Lake City will face Bishop Loughlin of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Monday at noon in a semifinal game at Orleans Arena — where Gonzaga plays annually in the West Coast Conference tournament.

Bishop Loughlin features A’riel Jackson, a 5-9 point guard who has signed with Cincinnati.

“We’re excited to be on a bigger stage, and see how we do,” Anderson said. “They’re super athletic, talented. They’ll put a lot pressure on us, and we’ll see how we play against that.”

LAS VEGAS — Hanna Christensen scored 18 points for the Trojans, who built a 15-point halftime lead then held off the Raptors of Centennial, Colo., in a quarterfinal game in the Tarkanian Classic Ruby Bracket.

“Hanna did a good job of getting herself open and into good spots to score,” said Post Falls coach Marc Allert, whose team led 25-10 at halftime. “She did what we’ve been expecting of her all season and had a really good game.”

Eagle Crest (5-1) rallied to cut the deficit to 39-38 late in the second half before the Trojans pulled away again.

“We knew they’d make a run and kind of got tentative for a while,” Allert said. “We got a little more aggressive and made some free throws to pull out the win. It was a great game for us and exactly why we came down here, to play a game like this.”

Capri Sims had eight points and 13 rebounds for Post Falls (8-1), which faces Birmington of Lake Balboa, Calif., on Monday at 5 p.m.

PRIEST RIVER — Sophomore Samantha Pound had 17 points and seven rebounds as the Spartans beat the Jaguars in the consolation game at the Spartan Christmas Tournament.

"It's probably her best overall game in maybe two years," Priest River coach Gary Stewart said. "I had [Desarai Humphrey] play point guard tonight a little bit and that kind of opened up Sam so she could get more into her game."

Junior Lilly Freitas scored 12 points for Priest River (3-5), and sophomore Allyson Barton tallied 8 points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

Belle Deboer led Genesis Prep with 17 points.

"She's a good player ... and I had to switch to a diamond-and-one in the second half because we just couldn't contain her playing regular man defense," Stewart said.
