PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City lights up Vegas from 3-point line

| December 18, 2021 1:20 AM

LAS VEGAS — Lake City coach James Anderson knew his team was going to have to play with a little more tempo to start things off in the bright lights of Las Vegas.

The Timberwolves were ready.

Lake City beat Desert Oasis of Las Vegas 81-71 on Friday at Durango High in a Diamond Bracket first-round game at the Tarkanian Classic.

Kendall Pickford, who signed with NAIA Arizona Christian University of Glendale, Ariz., earlier in the week scored 21 points, hitting seven of her team's 18 3-pointers in the game.

“We’ve been trying to play a little bit faster and knew they wanted to play quick,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We knew it was likely going to be an up-and-down game, and it certainly was. Kendall, being a senior, she stepped up and shot the ball really well. We’ve been kind of jumping on her back and she’s moving us along.”

Junior Lata Fakahafua hit three 3s and scored 35 points for Desert Oasis (3-1).

The games were played with two 16-minute halves.

With Lake City up 67-64 with four minutes left, Desert Oasis missed a 3 that would have tied it, and Zufelt hit a 3 at the other end.

“We turned the ball over a little bit in the first half, but played much better defensively in the second half,” Anderson said. “That kind of flipped the game for us because we were a little anxious at the start.”

After Desert Oasis scored five straight points to pull within 70-69, Kendall Pickford answered with a 3 with just over two minutes left.

Lake City plays Lynwood (Calif.) today at 3:30.

The Trojans outscored Clark 34-20 in the second half after being tied 26-26 at halftime.

“We played with a lot more energy in the second half defensively, which kind of wore them down,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “I’m happy with how we battled through and did a good job fighting through being tired.”
