River City Leadership Academy supports Victim Services Unit
POST FALLS — The Post Falls Chamber of Commerce’s River City Leadership Academy fundraiser to support the Police Department Victims Services Unit was a success.
This year’s drive collected 251 pajama and body care sets and $474 toward the purchase of more that was presented to VSU this week.
VSU provides support and resources to victims of crime in Post Falls. Specializing in domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse cases, it is staffed with two full-time victim advocates, Christine “CJ” Jones and Camie Wereley.
"We also provide emergency shelter and many of them are leaving an unsafe situation with nothing. Often there are children," said Wereley.
Being able to give some warm pajamas, stuffed animals to the children and care packages with basic toiletries and cleaning supplies helps to "slightly brighten a very depressing situation," Wereley said.
"It's just something that makes them feel good," she said.
The VSU team offers a 24-hour crisis line. Anyone needing support may call 208-773-1080.
Last year's efforts allowed RCLA to donate 2,127 pounds of food and $2,170 to the Post Falls Food Bank and $4,000 to Newby-ginnings of North Idaho.
“The winning group was the class of 2022,” said Christina Petit, president and CEO of the Post Falls Chamber. “But the real win is supporting the providers of this program and the people they will serve.”
