PREP SOCCER: Lane tallies hat trick as Sandpoint boys roll at Lewiston

| August 29, 2021 1:12 AM

LEWISTON — It only took 43 seconds for the Bulldogs’ Randy Lane to find the back of the net in a 3-0 nonleague victory over the Bengals at Walker Field.

“I think he was in the right spot at the right time on two of them and the other one was just simply having the will to put a punctuation on the game,” Sandpoint coach Tanner French said. “I thought he had a lot of creativity throughout the game which was pleasing to watch.”

Stirling Roget assisted on Lane’s first goal and Roman Jiles had one save in net.

It was Sandpoint’s second match of the season and first since Aug. 20.

“Having this entire week to work on some technical team building I think really benefited us,” French said.

Sandpoint (1-1, 0-1 IEL) play host to Moscow on Tuesday.

Lewiston is 0-3.

COEUR d’ALENE — Bryce Allred scored in the 53rd minute — his second goal of the day — for the Timberwolves in a win over the Titans of Idaho Falls at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“I am really proud of this group of players,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We’ve played four games in five days (going 4-0) and they have been awesome. They are a competitive bunch and really stepped up and rose to the occasion. Thunder Ridge played really well and really battled, but in the end, our guys had the character to dig deep and get the win.”

Tyler Allred had nine saves for Lake City (5-0), which travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Kael McGowan had four saves for the Trojans, who were limited to two shots on goal in a loss to the Bobcats at Post Falls High.

“We made some adjustments about 25 minutes into the match to make sure we could get some more shots,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “We got a little more dangerous, but it caused a bit of a disruption in our back line. We’re just struggling to link to our midfield and getting shots. Everything else is working great, but we’ll find it. Our guys are figuring it out and they’ll get there.”

Post Falls (0-4) hosts Lake City on Tuesday.

First half — 1, Mad, Mikey Hazelange (unassisted), 30:00. Second half — none.

Shots on goal — Mad 12, PF 2.

St. Maries 0

PRIEST RIVER — Bradley Gleason scored a pair of second-half goals as the much-improved and much-deeper Spartans defeated the Lumberjacks in Intermountain League play.

“Night and day,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said of Priest River (1-1-0, 1-0-0 IML) this season, compared to last. “For one thing, they don’t have eight (players) this year; they have about 22. They have more talent on the field, without a doubt.”

Renaldo said Priest River coach Daryl Hall missed most of the game after swallowing a bee, getting stung and having to go to the emergency room.

St. Maries (1-2, 1-2) plays at Immaculate Conception on Wednesday at Bodine Field in Post Falls.

First half — 1, PR, Shane Gamber, 21:00. Second half — 2, PR, Bradley Gleason, 49:00. 3, PR, Gleason, 73:00.

COEUR d’ALENE — Georgia Whitehead scored two goals for the Timberwolves, who limited the Titans of Idaho Falls to two shots on goal in a win at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“Thunder Ridge has some dangerous players, but our back line was outstanding today,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “They defended well, were composed and just played well as a group. Our front line continues to be dynamic as well. Once we were able to isolate their strong players, we were able to find a style of play that worked well and moved the ball really well.”

Mackenzie Goings had a goal and assist for Lake City (5-0), which hosts Post Falls on Tuesday.

First half — 1, LC, Georgia Whitehead (Elliotte Kortus), 3:00. 2, LC, Kortus (Taylor Miller), 5:00. Second half — 3, LC, Whitehead (Goings), 46:00. 4, LC, Goings (unassisted), 48:00.

SANDPOINT — The host Bulldogs battled back from a one-goal deficit twice against the Bengals, and in the 75th minute, Kylie Williams fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net to give SHS a thrilling nonleague win at War Memorial Field.

“We won that game because of grit and tenacity and that’s really inspiring to me,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “It’s a great sign.”

The Bengals took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but Williams got the Bulldogs on the board 10 minutes later with her first of two goals on the day. On a pass from Hannah Harvey, Williams broke through the Lewiston defense and trickled a shot past the goalkeeper.

The score remained 1-1 at the half.

Lewiston’s Naomi Kessler tallied her second goal of the match nine minutes into the second half to put the Bengals ahead 2-1.

The Bulldogs (2-0-0, 1-0-0) went on the attack after the score and generated multiple scoring chances, and in the 64th minute the persistence paid off. Kimbo Yarnell sent a ball into the area just outside the penalty box and after a couple of deflections, Piper Frank picked up the ball, charged forward and sent a left-footed blast into the goal to knot the contest at 2-2.

Angela Parrish gave St. Maries (0-2-1, 0-2-1 IML) a 1-0 lead. A save by defender Darriene Todd kept the score tied in the second half.

“The play of the game for me was Darriene’s amazing save with her face,” St. Maries coach Amber Morris said. “The keeper was out of the goal and she came out of nowhere. If she wasn’t there, they would have had another goal. She didn’t even miss a beat. It was a great moment.”

Kiersten Davis and Lizzie McCracken scored goals for Priest River (0-1-1, 0-0-1), which faces Coeur d’Alene Charter on Friday at The Fields at Real Life in Post Falls.
