PREP ROUNDUP: Brown's late TD, defensive stand leads Lakeside past Lewis County

| August 28, 2021 1:15 AM

• FOOTBALL

WORLEY - Vander Brown scored his fifth TD of the night in the fourth quarter, and Lakeside made a last-minute defensive stand to hold off visiting Lewis County 30-26 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Brown had 291 yards rushing on 21 attempts, the last of those a 21-yard score that put the Knights ahead by four with 3:30 remaining.

The Eagles drove to the Lakeside 10-yard-line before the Knights defense stiffened and to preserve the victory.

"It was a good team effort defensively," Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. "We had a good first half, but didn't do a good job on our 2-point conversions, and we had a few mistakes that let them back into the game."

Ty Hambly rushed for 274 yards and two TDs for Lewis County.

Linebacker Jonathan Sperber led the Knights in tackles, Dohrman said. Tucker Sanchez threw for a touchdown for Lakeside, which travels to Deary next week.

HARRISON FLATS — The host Warriors nearly delivered a victory to Jake Pfeiffer in his first game as head coach at his alma mater, but the Miners scored with less than 3 minutes remaining to capture the nonleague season opener for both teams.
