PREP ROUNDUP: Munday, Hartwig power Post Falls past Coeur d'Alene in opener

POST FALLS — Kylie Munday had 14 kills and 13 assists for the Post Falls Trojans in a 25-12, 25-14, 25-19 win over the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in the season and Inland Empire League opener for both schools at The Arena at Post Falls on Thursday.

Rylee Hartwig had seven kills, three blocks and two aces, Kassie Gardiner 16 assists and 10 digs, Claire Holding 10 digs and Sarah Rogney three aces for Post Falls, which claimed its first league title since 2010 last fall.

“Rylee played really well all around tonight, and so did Kylie,” Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. “It was just nice to get a match under our belts. We’re still trying to figure out who we are, but I thought we passed and serve/received the ball well tonight and bounced back after we gave up some points.”

Madi Symons had eight kills, Gia Janke two blocks, Hailey Wuolle 14 assists, Marcy Nelson eight digs and two aces and Olivia Dixon eight digs and one ace for Coeur d’Alene.

Post Falls competes in the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament, with matches scheduled to be held at Lewiston High, Sacajawea Middle School and Lewis-Clark State, on Saturday.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Hanah Stoddard totaled 23 kills and 14 digs as the host Timberwolves swept the Bears 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 in nonleague play.

“Hanah Stoddard had a phenomenal night,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “We knew Hanah would be one of our leaders, but it was fun to see. We want her handling the ball as much as she can. She hits in the front row and the back row; she can put the ball away anywhere.”

Nellie Reese had eight kills and 27 assists for Lake City. Ella Hosfeld added seven kills, one block and 15 assists, Avery Wright 10 digs, Kamryn Pickford three aces.

Lake City plays at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament in Lewiston on Saturday.

RATHDRUM — The defending state 4A champion Hawks opened the season by beating 5A Lewiston 25-17, 25-15 and 3A Kellogg 25-20, 25-15 at Hawk Court.

Kenna Simon had nine kills and five blocks for Lakeland against Lewiston, in an Inland Empire League match. New varsity setter Samantha Daniels had 25 assists, Ellie Carlson had 11 digs, Olivia Staudinger eight digs.

“Our girls played aggressively against Lewiston,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Our defense got a lot of tough hits up, and our hitters were able to put the ball to the floor. Samantha was able to move the ball around and made some great decisions on who to set.”

Against Kellogg in a nonleaguer, Addie Kiefer had nine kills for the Hawks. Daniels had 17 assists, Carlson eight digs, Staudinger six digs, Emily Morlan three aces, and Simon and Bethany Johnson had three blocks each.

“We served aggressively against Kellogg,” Badger said. “Emily had some great aces that kept our energy and intensity well balanced. We communicated well and played hard.”

Lakeland plays at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament on Saturday in Lewiston.

“Cooper stepped up big today playing keeper and had a couple really nice saves,” Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “It was also great to see the freshmen, Isaac (Hines) and Alec (Jones), step up and play a lot of quality minutes. Junior Elliotte Kortus had two goals and an assist, and junior Georgia Whitehead a goal and three assists for the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League win over the Bears at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“They’re both starting to come alive a little bit,” said Ruchti of the juniors, both of whom have verbally committed to Washington State. “They’re both outstanding players and we’re trying to make them the most productive players they can be. They’ve got great players around them and are starting to find their way. It’s just up to me to put them in the right spots. If I keep doing my job, hopefully we’ll get on the same page.”

“We did a lot of things right early in the game, except for find the back of the net,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Hats off to Grangeville’s keeper, she was great in every aspect of the game and was able to handle a lot of our shots and she cut off several of our through balls. Megan found a stronger presence in front of the goal in the second half and ignited a series of three quick goals by three different players to lock up the game early in the second half. Plus, several of my non-starters got some great minutes to just grow their game.”
