Coeur d’Alene Garden Club donates $16K
The Coeur d’Alene Garden Club donated $16,000 to 12 nonprofits through funds raised by its 23rd annual Garden Tour in Dalton Gardens.
“We only have about 60 members at the max, so for 60 members, and not all of them work on the tour, it's amazing that we're able to give away $16,000 after expenses,” said Bonnie Warwick, the garden tour co-chair. “For a few little dirty-fingered gardeners to be able to do that, we are so blessed to be able to share with the community.”
The giveaway took place at the private garden of Ed and Tina Hood on Tuesday, with recipients and garden club members in attendance.
“We have been very blessed to have been supported by the garden club for many years,” said Vicky Nelson, development director of the Kootenai Humane Society, one recipient of the donations. “They have been a very integral part of the society as I said for many years, so we're very appreciative of what they do for us.”
Nelson said the funds will be used for building expenses for the shelter’s new facility.
“We have recognized that need and have fostered our contribution to them, as well as Second Chance Pet Rescue,” Warwick said. “We're all dog lovers and animal lovers and we're compassionate.”
Another recipient was the Coeur d’Alene Public Library Foundation Children’s Naturebrary, a program to delight young readers with books and nature started by Mandi Harris, youth services supervisor.
“We are lucky to live in such a generous community,” Harris said.
The recipients were NIC dual enrollment, Hayden Meadows Greenhouse Project, Elder Help, I-Care, Shared Harvest Gardens, Safe Passage, Second Chance Pet Rescue, Silver Angels for the Elderly, Safety Net Inland Northwest, Kidscentric Sports Association, the Coeur d’Alene Library Foundation Children’s Naturebrary and the Kootenai Humane Society.
