PREP SOCCER: Five-time defending champion Charter girls open with easy win

| August 25, 2021 1:10 AM

BONNERS FERRY — After losing three of its top scorers to graduation, it took Coeur d’Alene Charter a few minutes to find the offense in its season opener.

It wasn’t too long, but consider it found.

Senior Isabella Lucky had two goals and junior Rebekah Hines had two goals and three assists for the Panthers in a 9-0 win over the Bonners Ferry Badgers in Intermountain League play on Tuesday.

“It took us about 20 minutes to get into our groove and connect strings of passes to find the back of the net,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith, who has coached the Panthers to the last five state 3A championships. “Once we did that, we were able to finish with six goals by the end of the first half. After graduating players who rarely left the field for us and dealing with a few injuries early in this season already, a handful of our sophomores and freshmen gave us some significant positive minutes and our veterans continued to show strong play once settling into the game. Overall, I’m quite pleased with our first league outing.”

COEUR d’ALENE — There was some good, as well as some not so good for Lake City.

But a league win is a league win.

Walker Jump and Connor Jump scored unassisted goals, and Tyler Gasper scored on an assist from Bryce Allred, leading the Timberwolves past the Bengals in an Inland Empire League game at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
