LEVY: A parent’s perspective

| April 25, 2021 1:00 AM

As the parent of three young children, I was shocked to see that the recent Post Falls School District levy, which is critical to the success of Post Falls students, failed. There has been a lot of misinformation surrounding this, however the proposed levy will not increase taxes and would merely replace the expiring levy of the same amount.

Compared to other districts of similar size and even to the other districts in our immediate area, this levy is very conservative and the school district is transparent about how these funds are used.

The levy funds supplement inadequate funding from the state and federal government to ensure that student’s basic needs are met and teachers are allowed to dedicate their hearts and minds to our children without having to dedicate their personal wallet to providing for the classroom.

The federal government requires that public schools provide a multitude of services for special education, many of which are covered by these funds. All Post Falls students deserve access to a quality education and for many, my son included, these services bridge the gap and make his success possible.

In the end, every community member, regardless of age or status, benefits from supporting public education because that means supporting educated adults of the future. Our students deserve to attend fully funded schools with access to all of the appropriate materials and professionals to guide them along the path to becoming functional, well-rounded, literate and knowledgeable adults.

For this reason I am asking you to look within your heart and find space for giving back to our community by voting yes for Post Falls schools on May 18.
