ST. MARIES — Junior outside midfielder Connor Wolfe scored the first hat trick of his high school career, leading the St. Maries Lumberjacks past the Orofino Maniacs 6-0 in Intermountain League play on Saturday.

“He did a good job out there today,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “Our midfield played well today — a lot of possession. Lance Hamblin and Dylan Sotin did a good job laying through balls in to him.”

St. Maries (2-1, 2-0 IML) plays host to Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy on Wednesday.

First half — 1, SM, Connor Wolfe (unassisted), 10:00. 2, SM, Corbin Scheer (unassisted), 34:00. 3, SM, Lance Hamblin (unassisted), 35:00. Second half — 4, SM, Grant Compton (unassisted), 44:00. 5, SM, Wolfe (unassisted), 61:00. 6, SM, Wolfe (unassisted), 63:00.

SANDPOINT — The host Bulldogs stormed out the gates against the Bengals, scoring two goals in the first 17 minutes.

But the Bulldogs were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way and the Bengals took advantage of their few chances to force a draw in nonleague play.

Sandpoint assistant coach Daniel Anderson, who served as the head coach for the match, said the Bulldogs did everything they needed to get the win. Sandpoint outshot, outpossessed and outplayed Lewiston but sometimes that’s just soccer, Anderson said.

“I think the boys were ready to play today and they brought the energy that we’re asking of them,” he said. “Overall, I’m happy with the way they played and the intensity they came with. It’s unfortunate not to get the win when you feel like it’s definitely something you should have got.”

Junior Canyon Nash opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the ninth minute off a nice assist from freshman Jett Longanecker. Stirling Roget found the back of the net eight minutes later off a pass from Nash.

Lewiston responded in the 21st minute to make it 2-1 at the half.

In the 63rd minute, a shot by Lewiston deflected off a Sandpoint defender and slid past goalkeeper Roman Jiles to even the score at 2-2.

After surrendering that goal, the Bulldogs attacked the Lewiston net but the Bengals did everything they could to prevent a score.

“When you know you need to score and the other team knows they’re probably happy with a tie coming out of here on the road, it’s hard to score in the last 15 minutes,” Anderson said.

Sandpoint outshot Lewiston 20-4.

The Bulldogs (3-1-3) host Coeur d’Alene 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at War Memorial Field.

First half — 1, Spt, Canyon Nash (Jett Longanecker), 9:00. 2, Sptt, Stirling Roget (Nash), 17:00. 3, Lewiston, Teddy Kessler (Samuel Miller), 21:00. Second half — 4, Lewiston, Samuel Miller (Biruk Miller), 63:00.

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs and Bengals went back and forth in nonleague play at Pine Street Field, but in the end visiting Lewiston prevailed late.

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 at the half. In the 48th minute, junior Piper Frank got Sandpoint on the scoreboard and knotted the game at 1-1. However, less than a minute later Lewiston scored to take the momentum away from the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint tied the game again in the 56th minute when junior Erin Eddy crossed the ball into the box and senior Jordie Breeden finished it.

With the score at 2-2, both teams pushed to find the back of the net and grab the victory. With just over 10 minutes left, the Bengals broke through.

Sandpoint had a couple corners down the stretch and a shot by junior forward Kylie Williams sailed just over the top of the net as the whistle blew to end the match.

“That’s easily the worst game of soccer we’ve played all year,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “The organization was poor and I thought the effort in the first half was lacking.

“We would have lost 5-2 or more if we didn’t have Hattie Larson in net,” he added.

Sandpoint outshot the Bengals 26-20 and Larson made 13 saves in net.

The Bulldogs (4-3) head to Coeur d’Alene at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

First half — 1, Lew, Ashlynn Skinner (unassisted), 12:00. Second half — 2, Spt, Piper Frank (unassisted), 48:00. 3, Lew, Naomi Kessler (unknown), 49:00. 4, Spt, Jordie Breeden (Erin Eddy), 56:00. 5, Lew, Hailey Skinner (A. Skinner), 69:00.

Lakeland

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint bested Lakeland in its sole home meet this season at the Litehouse YMCA.

The Bulldogs took down the Hawks by a combined score of 289-176.

“I thought we did really well,” Sandpoint coach Greg Jackson said. “I was really impressed with what the boys and the girls did. We’ve got four kids out due to illness and a couple of them last minute and we had to rearrange some kids and they all stepped up, so that was a really cool feeling.”

Sandpoint won nine of the 11 events on the girls side and eight of the 11 on the boys.

Emily Ballard claimed victories in the 200 IM and 100 fly and Kate Bokowy took first in the 50 free and 100 back.

“I continue to be impressed with Kate Bokowy,” Jackson said. “I think she is the strongest she has ever been. Her technique is on point and her attitude is on point.”

On the boys side, Hayden Leavitt had wins in the 200 IM and 400 free. Hayden Norling captured first in the 100 free and Caleb Norling grabbed the victory in the 200 free.

Jackson said the Bulldogs continue to be grateful that they get a chance to compete.

“We’re trying to do everything we can to be mindful of the pandemic, follow the right protocols and just do what we can to make sure that we do have an opportunity because we’ve already gotten some scares,” he said. “We’re just thankful to be able to be together.”

Sandpoint takes on Lake City in a dual meet on Oct. 10 at the Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene.
