Barnes running for NIC board

| September 5, 2020 1:00 AM

Michael Barnes has filed to run for the North Idaho College Board of Trustees representing Zone 5.

“I aim to contribute a fresh perspective with an appropriate and necessary balance to the Board," he said in a press release. "It will be my honor and privilege to support the best interests of current and future students and the taxpayers. I believe I possess the business and technical experience needed to make a difference so that our children can prosper in a changing and competitive world.”

Barnes has 38 years of experience in Computer Security and Information Security. He currently works as a full-time Information Technology (IT) Security Auditor for a U.S. based CPA firm specializing in the Payment Card Industry (PCI). His certifications include: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and Qualified Security Assessor (QSA).

He also serves his neighbors as their Precinct Committeeman.

Barnes is a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1982 – 1992. He has been a resident in Athol since 2006. He is married to his wife of 33 years and has one grown daughter and four grandchildren.

Barnes intends to succeed Brad Murray, who is retiring from the board. Barnes passionately believes in the importance of quality education while at the same time being responsible with the taxpayers’ dollars. In August, when the board voted for the 3% tax increase, it energized him to step up to the opportunity to make a difference.
