James Dale Maupin, 73

| September 2, 2020 1:00 AM

James Dale Maupin was born July 26, 1947, to Paul and Viola (Rhoads) Maupin in Hollywood. He grew up and attended school in San Fernando Valley, Calif.

James was united in marriage to Kathleen Bennett on Sept. 10, 1965, in Aiken, S.C. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Dawn Hayes, and 55 years of marriage together.

Shortly after their marriage, Jim honorably served his country and enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He served in the Green Berets, attaining the rank of staff sergeant, and received Purple Heart and combat infantry badge recognition. He was honorably discharged in 1969 and returned to Santa Clarita Valley, Calif. Jim served his community in both custody and patrol divisions in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 30 years. He retired in 1997. In 2004, he and his wife, Kathy, moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho, to a peaceful forested acreage.

While in Spirit Lake, Jim loved his land and garden. He also enjoyed shooting, fishing and hunting. He was active in the Coeur d’Alene Muzzleloader Club and Farragut Range Center. Jim will be remembered as an honorable, hardworking man with many skills and talents. He could fix almost anything. He was a fantastic husband, father and grandfather.

Jim passed away peacefully in Coeur d’Alene at Kootenai Health, with his family by his side, on Aug. 25, 2020, at the age of 73 years. He was a registered organ donor and was able to give the gift of sight through the donation of his cornea.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathy, of Spirit Lake; daughter, Dawn (and Robin) Hayes of Monterey, Calif.; granddaughter, Meagan Hayes of San Diego; sister, Kathy Ann Daugherty of Aurora, Colo.; close cousins, Sue (and Biff) Renkert of Sacramento, Calif.; Debbie Rhoads of Vallejo, Calif.; Colt Rhoads of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and many other extended cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Viola.

May he rest in peace and his memory live on in all who he mentored, taught and loved.

A celebration of Jim’s life is planned for spring of 2021.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Kootenai Health Foundation.
