STATE CROSS COUNTRY: Post Falls girls, Charter's Davis finish second

| October 31, 2020 1:22 AM

POCATELLO — Post Falls coach Brian Trefry knew that his girls team could adapt to a change in venue for the state cross country meet on two weeks notice.

Just how they did it, they just had to handle the pressure.

Junior Sammie Wood finished sixth in 18 minutes, 55.41 seconds, sophomore Anna Peters ninth in 19:16.32 and junior Alahna Lien 20th in 19:44.50 as the Trojans finished second at the state 5A meet at the Portneuf Wellness Complex on Friday.

The second-place finish was the best finish ever at state for the Post Falls girls. Their previous best was fourth last year.

“It was an amazing race,” said Trefry, whose team finished second to Boise — which won with 18 points to Post Falls’ 104. “It was obvious early on that Boise was going to win it all, but then it was all mixed up. I was hoping we’d be in trophy contention, but we were just not sure.”

In the 3A boys race, Coeur d'Alene Charter junior Logan Davis finished runner-up in 16:44.62. Davis was 21st at state last year, and 17th as a freshman. Owen Rogers of Gooding won in 16:21.50.

Davis credited his focus on yoga after workouts for helping him get to the next level.

“It really helped keep my muscles really loose and I felt a lot better this year and didn’t have any pain running,” Davis said. “The course was really fast today, especially in that first mile. Everyone started really fast, and I felt good getting out of the start.”

Davis added that after a mile and a half, his legs started to get cold, allowing Rogers to pull away.

“It was cold and my legs got really cold at that point,” Davis said. “Going from where I was last year to this year, it really gives me confidence going into my senior year.”

5A: Kaley Bohl was 21st and Leah Holding 56th for Post Falls, which beat out Eagle by 16 points for second.

“We had a good gap between our fourth and fifth runner, so I wasn’t really sure where we'd finish,” Trefry said. “To have two in the top 10, another in the top 20, it set us up really well.”

Due to coronavirus concerns, Post Falls lost key meets at Missoula (Mountain West Championships) and Cheney (Battle for the 509) earlier this fall. State was originally scheduled for Eagle Island State Park, but moved on Oct. 15 to Pocatello so fans would be allowed to attend.

“We hadn’t been in a super fast meet until today,” Trefry said. “But our kids handled it well.”

Post Falls finished fourth at state in 2019 at Pocatello, where elevation is at 4,400 feet.

“Our kids were excited to come back here because they ran so well here last year,” Trefry said. “Having ran here last year, and training at Schweitzer (Mountain Resort in Sandpoint) last year, our kids knew what to expect.”

Post Falls seniors Brycen Kempton (14th) and Alex Peters (16th) finished as medalists after placing in the top 20.

Idaho Falls, which claimed the 4A boys title before moving up a classification this fall, ran away with the boys team title with 23 points.

Nathan Green of Borah High in Boise won his third straight individual title. Samantha Smith of Boise won the girls championship.

4A: Sandpoint senior Nikolai Braedt finished 14th as the Bulldogs finished fourth.

Preston (boys) and Skyline (girls) won team titles.

3A: Freshman Jacob Barnhart (16th) and senior Dylan Royce (18th) earned medalist honors for the Timberlake boys, which finished fifth.
