VOTING: Wearing my opinion
Clerk Jim Brannon is overstepping the duties and responsibilities of his office (Post Falls Press, Oct. 27). Regarding Idaho’s law on electioneering, which prohibits “circulation of cards or handbills, solicitation of signatures, obstruction of polling place entries or any practice that interferes with the freedom to exercise their franchise or disrupts the administration.”
Nowhere does it mention hats, T-shirts or other personal apparel, nor does it provide for Mr. Brannon’s “personal interpretation” that the mentioned items are indeed PROHIBITED by the statute. Interpretation would fall under authority of the courts, not a county clerk.
You’re infringing on my First Amendment rights by attempting to twist the law to fit your “interpretation.” Stick to your job and the responsibilities describing it!
I didn’t honorably serve in the military to let some lower level crackpot erode the rights I served to protect. 99.9999% of the electorate has their mind made up how they’ll vote before they go to the polls. Me wearing a Trump 2020 hat isn’t going to interfere with them exercising their franchise or in anyway influence their voting decisions. It’s a hat for Pete’s sake! To quote the challenger in the presidential race, “C’mon man!” Leave the inconsequential out of it and quit with the posturing. You certainly have more important duties and responsibilities to attend to. Stay in your lane!
