RACISM: No charges alleged

| October 30, 2020 1:00 AM

After reading a few letters to the editor Wednesday, I find it important to clarify the Coeur d’Alene City Mayor and Council made no statements implying a specific group or individuals lawfully assembling in the city are racists.

The mayor and council recently put a statement into the record supporting human rights and dignity for all and condemning any group that promotes white supremacy. This is a core principal that I believe is supported by all citizens, and it is unconscionable to label any person a racist due to their political party affiliation or their right under state law to openly carry a firearm.

If anyone is victimized during any form of protest, we strongly encourage citizens to contact the police and it will be thoroughly investigated.

Our community has much more in common in rejecting racism than we do in accepting or promoting it. This is due to the ugly, violent history of the Aryan Nations and the efforts made by the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, our media, our justice system, community organizations, and many caring individuals who worked to defeat their vile message. We need to continue to work together, understand and respect our different perspectives and as a community pull together.
