PREP FOOTBALL: Timberlake turns to fullback to down Bonners Ferry

| October 17, 2020 1:22 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Needing to take some time off the clock and wear down the Bonners Ferry defense, Timberlake turned to its backfield to get the job done.

Senior fullback Luke Fortin stepped up and finished it.

Fortin had 34 carries for 183 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers in a 28-10 win over the Badgers, clinching at least a share of the Intermountain League title. Timberlake can win it outright next Friday at winless Priest River.

Fortin scored two touchdowns in the second half for Timberlake (3-3, 2-0 IML), which outgained Bonners Ferry 399-210.

“Luke was our workhorse tonight,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “With 34 carries, it’s been a long time since we’ve had a fullback with that many carries here. Luke is a really physical runner. He’s one of our five seniors, and he knew we needed him tonight. I told him it’s his to go with, and he ran really hard for us and helped us control the clock in the second half.”

Bonners Ferry (3-3, 1-1) travels to Kellogg next Friday night.

“Bonners Ferry played really well in the first quarter,” Amos said. “We struggled to move the ball early on, and we challenged our guys to control the line of scrimmage at halftime. They came out and responded well to that and we were able to hold onto the ball in the second half.”
