Idaho closed out the nonconference portion of the 2019 season against Big Sky foe Eastern Washington. The teams weren't scheduled to meet in league play last season, but added the game to the nonconference slate because of regional interest.
The Vandals entered the game 1-2 on the season, after a one-score loss at Wyoming the week prior. More important than the loss, however, was the damage done to the roster.
“We had five starters out,” Idaho coach Paul Petrino recalled. “Five guys. That’s another reason to be proud.”
But after 30 minutes of play, it wasn’t the Vandals that looked shorthanded. Idaho dominated to the tune of 147 rushing yards in the first two quarters. The defense was just as spectacular, holding the high-powered EWU offense to just 103 total yards in the first half. Idaho scored early and often, and took a 28-0 advantage into the break.
“We were feeling good, 28-0,” wide receiver Jeff Cotton said. “It was something we told ourselves we were going to do. It gave us confidence and excitement to go out there and finish the game.”
“I want to stay humble, I want our team to stay humble. I want us to know we got here by working hard,” Petrino said. “But I would say we outplayed them at every single position in the first half.”
EWU made a run in the second half but the Vandal offense did what it needed to do to keep the Eagles at bay.
