POST FALLS — Michael Simpson scored on a scramble in front of the net in the 73rd minute for the game’s only goal, lifting the fourth-seeded Timberlake Tigers past the fifth-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks 1-0 in the first round of the 3A District 1-2 boys soccer tournament Tuesday at The Fields at Real Life Ministries.

Timberlake (4-7-2) will face top-seeded Bonners Ferry on Friday at 4 p.m. at The Fields in a winner-to-state semifinal game. The loser is eliminated.

St. Maries, which started its season three weeks late due to COVID-19, then quarantined for two weeks during the season due to a positive test, finished 2-2-0.

“We’ve only had two practices since Sept. 23,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “I was tickled pink the boys kept it as close as they did. Grey (Greyson Sands, who had 10 saves) had a heckuva game.”

In the other first-round game Tuesday, third-seeded Grangeville beat sixth-seeded Priest River 3-0. Grangeville will take on second-seeded Coeur d’Alene Charter in the other semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. at The Fields.

First half — none. Second half — 1, MIchael Simpson (unassisted), 73:00.

Shots on goal — SM 5, TL 13.

Saves — SM, Greyson Sands 10; TL, Nate Anderson 3.
