PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland rally falls just short
MOSCOW — Lakeland wide receiver Thomas Calder caught a touchdown pass from Devon Suko with 2:15 remaining, but the Hawks were unable to get a stop as the Moscow converted a third-and-long to run out the clock in a 30-22 win the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both schools at the Kibbie Dome.
Lakeland drove into the redzone on its first possession of the game, but had a 21-yard field goal blocked and returned for a touchdown by Moscow linebacker Jonah Ellis.
John White scored on a 40-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter for Lakeland.
Moscow held Lakeland scoreless in the second and third quarter to build a 30-7 lead before a Riley Siegford 60-yard interception return cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter for Lakeland.
Lakeland (3-3) had its game next Friday with St. Maries cancelled, and will now host Sandpoint in the regular season finale on Oct. 23.
Moscow (3-0) travels to Sandpoint next Friday. With a win, the Bears — who had opted to play an intramural schedule and didn’t begin playing until Sept. 25 — can clinch the league title and top seed to the state 4A playoffs.

KELLOGG — The wait might have been well worth it for the Tigers on Friday night.
After being stuck behind a traffic accident on the Fourth of July Pass, Timberlake jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter en route to a win over the Wildcats in the Intermountain League opener for both at Teeters Field.
“That wasn’t what we were hoping for,” said Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said of the accident, which delayed kickoff of the game until 8 p.m. “We got to the field at 7:25, but everyone started late so it really wasn’t as big of a factor.”
Kale Paslay scored on a 15-yard run and Ashton Peightal threw a 55-yard touchdown to Zach Yetter to give Timberlake a 15-0 lead early in the first.
“We were able to move the ball pretty good in the first half,” Amos said. “We were able to get some deep passes, and when we’re able to do that, it helps a ton.”
Grady Woodworth scored on a 20-yard run to give Timberlake 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
Timberlake (2-3) hosts Bonners Ferry next Friday. The Badgers beat Priest River 22-0 in other IML play on Friday.

CLARK FORK — Before the game even kicked off, Clark Fork football was facing an uphill battle against one of the best 1A Division II teams in the state.
But the Wampus Cats grinded all night and outscored Mullan-St. Regis in the second half. It wasn't enough though as the Tigers continued their impressive season by handing Clark Fork a 72-38 loss on Friday.
"My hats off to a really good Mullan football team," Clark Fork coach Brian Arthun said. "I can see why they are ranked third in the state, it's well deserved. They're bigger, faster, stronger and it really showed in the first half."
Mullan-St. Regis scored on the first or second play of every offensive possession they had in the first half, except their last drive when they took a knee to secure a 54-16 halftime lead.
The Wampus Cats were able to find the end zone twice in the first half. The first came on a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore Antonio Mayorga. The second came on a 14-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Ethan Howard to junior Carter Sanroman.
Every chance Arthun got, he told his team to keep fighting and the Wampus Cats embraced that mentality in the second half.
After the Tigers scored to open the second half, Clark Fork responded just three plays later when Howard connected with Sanroman for a 41-yard touchdown pass.
Mullan-St. Regis found the end zone two more times to increase its advantage to 72-22. At that point, the Wampus Cats could have let up and accepted defeat, but they didn't.
Sanroman returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown with 10:28 left in the contest. On the next drive by Mullan-St. Regis, junior Sam Barnett picked off a pass to give the Wampus Cats great field possession. Clark Fork capitalized a few plays later when Howard found Sanroman for a third time in the game to make it 72-38.
Arthun said his boys gave it their all in the second half.
"We talked at halftime about not thinking about the score," he said, "and just coming out and showing some fight and some pride and some heart, and I was really proud of the second half the way they came out and fought ... The kids didn't give up and didn't quit."
Sanroman was responsible for all of Clark Fork's touchdowns. Caleb Ball had seven total touchdowns for the Tigers.
Clark Fork (3-2, 1-1 NSL) hosts Kootenai at 7 p.m. next Friday.
Mullan (6-1, 2-0) returns from a bye next week to play at Kootenai on Oct. 23.
