NIC: Qualifications matter

| October 9, 2020 1:00 AM

I am a lifelong Republican because I believe the Republican Party puts up the best candidates for office. Unfortunately, in the election for the North Idaho College (NIC) Board of Trustees, the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee (KCRCC) has chosen a candidate for loyalty to the chairman, not for qualifications. This candidate has refused to participate in forums and interviews to provide the public with information about himself, depending strictly on the party apparatus to push him through.

When it comes to non-partisan races like the NIC Trustee race, the priority is the public’s interest, not party interest. Party first, as the KCRCC is pushing in this race, is the Marxist/Leninist model, meaning the government should be subservient to the Party. Such an approach has no business in our country’s governmental affairs.

I am acquainted with both Dr. Paul Sturm and his opponent running for a seat on the NIC Board of Trustees.

Dr. Sturm’s résumé shows he is highly qualified for this role; his opponent is not. The trustee role is to maximize the interest of the taxpayers, as well as the interest of the college’s student body and staff. Dr. Sturm recognizes the importance to balance these responsibilities.

What Dr. Sturm brings to the table as a trustee far exceeds what his opponent would bring.

NIC has been a budget conscious, well-regarded asset to our community for many years. Let’s keep it this way by voting for Dr. Sturm as an NIC Trustee.
