Police: Woman stole more than $20,000 from boyfriend’s father
COEUR d’ALENE — A woman is facing multiple felony charges after police said she stole more than $20,000 from her boyfriend’s father and then forged documents to hide the theft.
Marcie A. Breshears, 35, is charged with grand theft, preparing false documents, forgery and fraudulent use of a computer, all felonies.
The charges stem from an incident earlier this year, when a retired Coeur d’Alene man received notice from his bank that his checking account was overdrawn. He reportedly discovered that a total of $20,403.24 had been taken out of his account between Jan. 14 and April 22.
Bank statements showed multiple transactions that went to Breshears, who had been dating the man’s son. She had reportedly lived with her boyfriend at the man’s residence while he was out of state for the winter.
The man told police his son had permission to access his bank account in order to pay the man’s bills while he was out of state.
When confronted, Breshears allegedly told the man she was also a victim of fraud and was expecting a large payment from her insurance. The man said Breashears promised to pay him back, court records said.
Two months later, Breshears reportedly produced a photo of a letter she had received from her insurance company regarding her claim, showing an offer of more than $26,000. Police later determined that the letter was fabricated, according to court documents.
Police reportedly investigated the incident for two months before bringing charges against Breshears in September.
Breshears allegedly told police that she took the money without permission and said that she had made a fake letter from her insurance company so the man “would not continue to bother her” about the money.
A judge ordered that Breshears be held on $100,000 bail.
