PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland tops district rival Timberlake for second time this season

| October 3, 2020 1:18 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Ammon Munyer caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Devon Suko with under a minute remaining, just after a Lakeland interception, to send the visiting Hawks past the Timberlake Tigers 20-13 in a nonleague game at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium on Friday.

“The quarterback just dropped a dime and made a great play,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “They just made a great play. It was a typical Timberlake-Lakeland game. It was very hard-hitting, physical and both teams were trying to move the ball. It was a real physical game.”

Timberlake opened the scoring on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ashton Peightal to Zach Yetter in the first quarter. Peightal’s pass to Carter Fortin in the third quarter gave Timberlake 13-6 lead after three quarters.

John White ran for two touchdowns, the second on a 55-yard run to give Lakeland a 14-13 lead.

“We’re a fairly young team and didn’t come into the season with a ton of experience,” Amos said. “Our kids played really hard and went all out. In the first game against them (a 36-7 loss in Rathdrum), when things got tough, we had a tough time reacting. Each time things got tough tonight, we did a better job reacting to it tonight.”

Timberlake (1-3) opens Intermountain League play at Kellogg next Friday.

Lakeland (3-2) faces Moscow in the 4A Inland Empire League opener next Friday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

MULLAN — Jayson Hall scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to give the Knights a 26-20 lead with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter, but the Tigers outscored the visitors 24-8 in the fourth quarter to earn a nonleague win at John Drager Field.

“It was a really good game and I’m proud of the boys,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We played a lot better against them that our first game (a 70-36 loss at Plummer on Aug. 28), but we just missed some chances in the red zone. We had the ball in the red zone a few times, and didn’t capitalize on our chances and they did.”

Caleb Ball ran for four touchdowns for Mullan-St. Regis (4-1), which is scheduled to visit Clark Fork next Friday.

Tucker Sanchez threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns for Lakeside (3-2), which is idle next week, then returns to face Lapwai on Oct. 16. The site for that game has not yet been determined.

“I was proud of the effort we gave today,” Dohrman said. “I don’t usually get too happy with a loss, but was happy with how the boys played. It was a close game and we’ve shown some improvement. We just came up a little short today.”
