PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeland rolls past Timberlake in season opener

| November 29, 2020 1:20 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Lakeland couldn’t miss, and Timberlake couldn’t do much to stop the Hawks.

4A Lakeland bolted to a 29-2 lead after one quarter, and rolled to an 81-23 victory over the 3A Tigers in the high school boys basketball season opener Saturday afternoon at Timberlake High.

Lakeland shot 63 percent (32 of 51) from the field for the game, including 9 of 15 from 3-point range.

“They didn’t miss; they’re shooting percentage was fantastic,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said of Lakeland. “And you add to the fact they’re all 6-8 (tall), and the tallest kid I put on the floor was 6-1, against a really good basketball team, that’s a bad combination.”

Jalen Skalskiy led four Lakeland players into double figures with 16 points. Fellow senior Noah Haaland added 15 points. Grant Roth hit 3 of 5 3-pointers and scored 12 points, and senior Ammon Munyer also scored 12. Senior Carson Seay hit 3 of 4 3-pointers and scored nine points.

Sophomore Hunter Higgins, who saw some varsity playing time last season, led Timberlake with 11 points.

“There just wasn’t any quit,” Menti said of his team. “You’re down 29-2 and it would be easy to stop playing hard, and the kids kept playing hard.”

Lakeland travels to Kellogg on Wednesday.

Timberlake plays host to Sandpoint on Thursday.
