Margaret Joan Gove Mahoney
On Nov. 4, 2020, we lost our mom, Margaret Joan Gove Mahoney. Better known to most of her friends as Peggy, she will be deeply missed.
Our mother touched not only our lives, but the lives of so many musicians over the course of her life. With a master’s degree in vocal performance, she surrounded herself with music in her various positions around Coeur d’Alene. She spent many hours teaching private music lessons in her home. She served as a music minister at St. Pius X Church for several years. She also taught choir at Lakes Middle School. However, the bulk of her time as a music teacher in North Idaho was spent as the band and orchestra director at Canfield Middle School.
In September 2002, Peggy was awarded the “Idaho Governor’s Award in the Arts” for her support of Arts Education. In her “retirement,” she continued to spend time teaching music education through the University of Idaho extension at North Idaho College.
Peggy was an amazing mother and an outstanding music teacher. Her students frequently recognized her around town and always stopped her to say hello.
She was a music lover through and through. She was humming and singing up until she passed.
She is so loved and will be dearly missed. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Norm Mahoney, and her sister, Jacqueline Gove Barclay. She is survived by her brother, Jimmy (Eleanor) Watson-Gove; her children, Scott (Kim) Mahoney and Dani (Scott) Clarkson; and her grandchildren, Alexa Mahoney, Raya Mahoney, Brennan Mahoney, Prudence Clarkson and Jude Clarkson.
We are tentatively planning a memorial service for some time in the spring. Hopefully, this will allow us to gather with friends and family outside, where we can be safe, yet still connect and remember.
