Verlyn ‘Bus’ Nyle Asmussen

| November 13, 2020 1:00 AM

Verlyn Nyle Asmussen, age 87, peacefully and surrounded by his family, went home to be with Jesus on the afternoon of Oct. 24, 2020. Bus, Buster, Buzz, George, Dad, Pa, Uncle Bus, Grandpa … No matter what you called him, “Just don’t call me late for dinner!” He had some of the best “dad jokes” around and loved to tell them. Born in Iowa to Oscar and Marie Asmussen, he was the second of six children.

One spring evening, this 17-year-old “farm boy,” while out with his buddy, met the love of his life, Beverly Redden. After courting for about 10 months, Beverly suggested they get married. She said that would be okay, so April 19, 1952, they said “I do.” They were married 64 years when Beverly passed.

Bus worked several jobs, from farmhand to processor at a meat packing company, after many hard times, including a flood where they lost all of their belongings in 1956. Looking for a better life for their growing family, they packed up their two sons and most of Beverly’s family and headed west. After arriving in the Seattle area, he worked for Boeing for a short time, then Manning’s Bakery as a delivery driver. He drove trucks delivering food for Perry Brothers and Kraft Foods. During this time, in 1969, they adopted their third child, a daughter. Bus and his family lived in Edmonds, Wash. and eventually purchased land and built a home in Woodinville, Wash., in 1983.

Retiring in 1992, that’s when the real adventures began. Everyday was a Tuesday … RETIREMENT!

Bus and Bev loved camping; they traveled the country spending winters in the warm weather. Bus, with the “gift of gab,” enjoyed meeting new and old friends along the way and enjoying each other’s company; he often would tell us of what great times those were, eventually settling again in the Spokane Valley.

Bus loved the Lord and his family. He was a great, loving, gentle and honest man. He is loved and will be missed by so many.

Bus was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Marie Asmussen; his wife, Beverly Asmussen; brothers, Arvaughn Asmussen and Alvern Asmussen; sister, Vonnie Asmussen; son, Steven Asmussen; and granddaughter, Greycin Krause. He is survived by his brother, Delwyn Asmussen; sister, Dianne (Lynn) Fromme; son, Vernon Asmussen; and daughter, Mary (Kelly) Krause; eight grandchildren; along with numerous great-grandchildren.

No services are scheduled at this time. Yates Funeral Home is entrusted with final arrangements. Please visit Bus’s online memorial and sign his guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
