STATE VIRTUAL SWIM MEETS: Robillard wins 'virtual' state title

Lake City High junior Logan Robillard was working on some English 101 homework Friday morning when his bedroom door flew open.

It’s not quite a podium, but in 2020, it is the way Robillard found out he was the state 5A champion in the 500-yard freestyle.

“A friend barged into my room and told me I was a state champion,” said Robillard, who was runner-up in the event in 2019. “I’d thought someone in Boise had beaten me, but I looked and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I won.”

His friend, fellow Timberwolf junior Zachary Castaneda, was tracking results online and raced over to Robillard's house around 11 a.m.

“I didn’t know the results were up yet when he showed up,” Robillard said. “I didn’t think they were coming out until Friday night.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Idaho High School Activities Association switched to a virtual state meet this year, with results from district and regional meets being used to determine state placers.

Robillard won the 500 freestyle on Oct. 24 in 4 minutes, 47.52 seconds. He finished some 16 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

“I kind of had an idea I’d be in contention,” Robillard said. “But I didn’t know if the guy that beat me last year (John Sutherlin of Timberline) was a senior or not.”

Sutherlin graduated in 2020.

“I had a good feeling I was going to take it,” Robillard said. “As it turned out, the kid had graduated. It feels pretty good to be a champion. After all the work I’ve gone through trying to get my turns right and working with coaches, it’s a good feeling. The season has been weird, but I’m just grateful I got the title.”

Robillard was also runner-up in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.23, 3 seconds behind the winner.

“Logan has always been a fast swimmer,” third-year Lake City coach Shelly Sobek said. “He’s a natural swimmer and has been working on the finer points and technique and really improved this year, especially for being a long-distance swimmer.”

Throughout the season, no fans were allowed at the swim events due to strict social distancing guidelines.

And while he’s happy with his title, Robillard added he still liked watching the competition at state, even if he wasn’t participating.

“I really like to see how the Boise kids race,” Robillard said. “It’s kind of a bummer, but I still enjoyed the season.”

Lake City’s girls finished third overall, with the boys fourth.

“I’m happy and proud of what both teams did,” Sobek said. “With everything that changed during the season, they just lived for the moment each time they competed. And I couldn’t be more proud of that.”

Lake City senior Lance Mielke was runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:05.08) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.64).

Post Falls senior Natasha Astrauskas was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:00.46).

Boise won its third straight state team title in both boys and girls, the third year the Idaho High School Activities Association has sanctioned the sport.

In 4A, Bishop Kelly swept team titles, the second-straight for the boys and first for the girls. Sandpoint’s girls, which won the 2019 4A title, finished second.
