STEVE CAMERON BLOG: Let’s call this a wrap

| May 23, 2020 8:00 AM

Still here.

However...

I’m leaving, in a couple senses of that word.

First of all, I’m heading into the great unknown – traveling out of state while still in the scary world of Covid-19.

My spine, which now has been battered and hammered like a pinata by various doctors and surgeons, needs more attention.

Since all the people who have worked on it, and presumably know what’s clanking around in there, practice medicine in suburban Kansas City, well...

It makes some sense to take a chance on a screwed-up commercial airline, hoping an N95 mask protects me and everybody else, and complete a trip that would have been considered totally routine just a few months ago.

Sigh.

It’s an understatement to say I’m not looking forward to the flights. Or to meeting with some evil back surgeons, either.

But needs must...

Meanwhile, I mentioned that I was leaving in more than one sense of the word.

Besides the trip to see my docs, I’m also leaving this space at The Press.

The “lockdown blog,” which I’ve been writing since everyone was advised to stay at home during this pandemic, is going to be put on the shelf.

I hesitate to say we’re done with it forever, since this tricky coronavirus might well come back for another big splash — as if around 100,000 dead in the United States isn’t enough.

If it becomes necessary to spend most of our time at home (again), then maybe the blog will return to give us all a second bout of social connection.

For now, though, I’ll be returning to my day job as a Press sports columnist — prepared to explain how various athletic pursuits are resuming.

And maybe asking why.

Let’s see how that goes, shall we?

In the meantime, I really need to say how amazing you’ve been in supporting this blog — something The Press doesn’t generally publish — and how great it’s felt to receive all of your feedback.

Thanks so much for the emails, since hearing from so many of you really cheered me up on plenty of days when “shelter in place” didn’t seem like much fun at all.

I hope the blog either informed or entertained you from time to time during this difficult and confusing period in all of our lives.

That was the idea, to make it personal — since no one has been exempt from worry or wonder during the pandemic.

For now, please catch me over in the sports section, and cross your fingers that this blog doesn’t come back off the shelf, only because we have another wave of the coronavirus.

I’ve really enjoyed sharing thoughts and experiences with you, but I’ve liked NOTHING about the circumstances that brought the blog to life.

For now...

Best to you all, be well, and stay safe.
