The U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary Coeur d’Alene Flotilla will perform Vessel Safety Checks beginning this month. The checks are free at boat launches and can be scheduled at residential homes or wherever boats are stored.
The auxiliary reminds boaters to have personal flotation devices for everyone on board as well as fire extinguishers, working navigation lights and visual distress signals. For vessels less than 26 feet, one extinguisher is required while boats over 26 feet require two. Check regulations for larger boats. A marine VHS radio is recommended with channel 16 used as the marine distress channel.
National Safe Boating Week is May 16-22. For more information call 208-265-2580.
