Slow down, speed racers

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped several drivers for putting their pedal to the metal a bit too hard.

According to KCSO reports, deputies responded to Higgens Point and gave verbal warnings to drivers for racing on Sunday.

Deputies also responded to the area of Highway 53 and Beck Road for about six to eight vehicles reportedly racing on the roadway heading west. Deputies made contact with two of the vehicles/occupants while the others continued on toward Newman Lake.

“Reckless speeders” returned to Higgens Point later that day. When deputies responded, the group had dwindled due to the rain. One person stated some people were racing there, but they were asked to leave. The remaining individuals said they just wanted to hang out.

“They were reminded that the area was a State Park and they needed a permit for an organized gathering. The remaining group was well behaved and slowly dispersed,” the KCSO report said.

On Monday, a patrol sergeant stopped two vehicles in the area of Huetter and Prairie that were racing, going 88 mph in a 45 mph zone. Both vehicles pulled over, and deputies found a male was in one car and his sister was in the other.

“They decided to race each other from the light. Both were issued citations for racing,” the report said.
