The Idaho Secretary of State’s Office on Monday morning posted a list of state and federal candidates who will appear on the May primary ballot.

While incumbent Jim Risch will be the only Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in the primary, he will not go unopposed in November. Paulette Jordan and Jim Vandermaas are running for the Democratic ticket in May. Familiar Constitution Party candidate Ray Writz is running for Risch’s seat, as well. Natalie Fleming is running as an independent, so she won’t appear on the ballot until November.

Congressman Russ Fulcher, representing District 1, will defend his seat against fellow Republican Nicholas Jones. Democrats Staniela Nikolova and Rudy Soto will square off for their party’s nomination in May, while Libertarian candidate Joe Evans will also run for the seat.

LEGISLATURE DISTRICT 2

State Sen. Steve Vick will run unopposed to retain his District 2 seat in Boise.

The district’s Seat A in the Idaho State House will be a Republican stand-off between Dalton Gardens incumbent Vito Barbieri and Coeur d’Alene’s Russell McLain. The District’s Seat B — currently held by Pastor Tim Remington, who was appointed to fill in for expelled former Rep. John Green — has two Republicans and a Libertarian looking to fill the seat. Rathdrum’s Tim Kastning and Hayden’s Doug “Doug O” Okuniewicz will vie for the position, while Bayview’s Jennifer Luoma has also filed her candidacy for the Seat B slot.

LEGISLATURE DISTRICT 3

Legislative District 3’s Senate seat held by Don Cheatham will come down to three candidates from Post Falls. Alex Barron will go against Marc Eberlein and Peter Riggs for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat in May. Meanwhile, in the District’s two House races, Republican incumbents Ron Mendive of Coeur d’Alene and Tony Wisniewski of Post Falls will face off against Post Falls Democratic challengers Christopher Matthews and Teresa Borrenpohl, respectively.

LEGISLATURE DISTRICT 4

State Sen. Mary Souza of Coeur d’Alene, representing District 4, will try to hold her seat in November against challenger and former Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee chair Shem Hanks. Incumbent Jim Addis faces a May primary challenge from Pat “Mitch” Mitchell for his Position A seat in the Idaho House. Seat B incumbent Paul Amador is unopposed.

The primary election that empowers voters to decide the nominees for the four Idaho parties — Republican, Democrat, Constitution and Libertarian — is May 19. The general election, where voters will choose between those parties and independent candidates to decide who should fill state, federal and county seats, is Nov. 3.
