Alton ‘Al’ Jay Hassell III, 76

| March 11, 2020 1:00 AM

Former Coeur d’Alene Mayor Al Hassell (Alton Jay Hassell III) died peacefully in Coeur d’Alene, at the age of 76.

Al is survived by his wife, Judy Hassell; siblings Dee Gohl, Rick Agopsowicz, Mike and Ken Wright; children Jay Hassell and Kari Hepworth (Hassell); stepdaughter, Shawna Appel; 10 grandchildren: Collin, Aidan, Sarah (Caleb), Shane, Kevin, Nick, Isaac (Brittany), Shawn, Emily and Shiann; and great-grandson, Hezekiah. He is preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Kris Blankenship.

Al was born on Nov. 17, 1943, in Anacortes, Wash., to Alton Jay Hassell, Jr. and Vennie Lou Johnson. He married Judy in 1982. After moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1968, he found employment in different roles before getting into insurance with the Mutual of New York. He eventually started his own firm and became part of the Anderson Hassell Financial Services partnership, from which he retired in 2014.

Al was passionate about public service. Over his entire life he was an active and dedicated member of many organizations, including, but not limited to the Jaycees, Kiwanis and numerous clubs and committees where he donated thousands of hours before and during his three terms on the Coeur d’Alene City Council and one term as Mayor. He enjoyed attending the Candlelight Christian Fellowship with Judy (and breakfast after). In his limited time off he enjoyed science fiction movies at the theatre, watching the Seattle Seahawks and a bargain hot dog lunch at Costco. Highlights were his and Judy’s trip to Israel to visit the Holy Lands and listening to Judy play classical music on the piano.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at Yates Funeral Homes — Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Al’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of North Idaho (www.hospiceofnorthidaho.org), 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815.

The family would like to thank Creekside Inn and Hospice for their efforts, care and dedication to his peaceful passing.
