You want election news? Here you go

| March 8, 2020 1:00 AM

Good thing you like politics, because there’s a whole lot of that headed your way.

As you’ve probably already noticed, readers are writing endorsement letters to the editor for their favorite candidates. We’ll go over the rules for those in a moment.

Idaho’s presidential primary elections are Tuesday. In today’s paper we’re answering basic questions on that front.

The state’s much-anticipated primary election for county and state positions is May 19. To help you learn lots about the people seeking your vote, we’ll publish a voters guide on May 2. The guide will be included in every copy of The Press distributed that day, as well as being available digitally. (To see all of the newspaper’s special publications, go to cdapress.com and click on the capital E next to the search box at the top of the home page. Then scroll down.)

You don’t have to wait for the voters guide to be published to see where many local candidates stand on the issues. The Press is distributing questionnaires to all the candidates and publishing them as they’re returned on cdapress.com. Go to the website and click on 2020 Elections.

Candidate forum season also is upon us. The Press will sponsor forums next month for legislative candidates and for candidates seeking the two Kootenai County Board of Commissioners seats up for grabs this year. The Coeur Group will sponsor an engaging, entertaining Kootenai County sheriff candidate forum in April as well. These forums from the Coeur d’Alene Public Library will be live-streamed and recorded for rebroadcast on CDA-TV. Stay tuned for dates and times.

Other organizations planning candidate forums that will be open to the public, please email your information to Mike Patrick: mpatrick@cdapress.com

The Press has also been keeping track of candidates tossing their hat in the ring during the official filing period of March 2-13. In the March 14 edition of the newspaper, we’ll have a complete roundup of all the hopefuls.

There’s another way to learn about the candidates: Those who know them can share their insights through candidate endorsement letters to the editor.

Letters should be 275 words or fewer, and writers are limited to one letter during this primary election cycle. You can write about one candidate or several, but it has to be submitted in one letter no longer than 275 words. Letters from Press subscribers will be given priority. Letters from non-subscribers will be published as space allows.

Sometimes these letters provide personal and professional information that otherwise would not surface during a campaign. So, subscribers, speak up on behalf of the folks you know will represent the interests of their constituents best. Send your candidate endorsement letters to mpatrick@cdapress.com.

The deadline for candidate endorsement letters is Monday, May 11.
