STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Post Falls again — with an assist ... Trojans win third straight state 5A title, and fifth in six seasons; Coeur d’Alene fourth; Timberlake third in 3A

| March 1, 2020 1:00 AM

NAMPA — After the 220-pound championship match, Meridian’s Charley Hastriter thanked his cheering section, then turned and addressed his newly-found one on the other side of the mat.

That group, thanks to Hastriter, is the now three-time state 5A wrestling champion Post Falls Trojans.

After wins by senior A.J. De La Rosa at 145 pounds, then junior Ethan Miller at 152, Post Falls had to wait until Hastriter beat Highland’s Logan George for the Trojans to clinch the title at the Ford Idaho Center on Saturday.

“I’d had enough time through the day to know that it was going to be close,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “I just knew we had to keep fighting. I wasn’t nervous, but it was more like, ‘well, let’s see what happens.’”

Post Falls has won five of the last six titles dating back to 2015. The Trojans were runners-up in 2017.

“There’s great coaches all the way through the program,” said Reardon, in his 11th season as coach. “It’s more than just me. There’s so many great coaches all the way through to the club level. We’ve also got great parents, and it’s really humbling to be a part of.”

Post Falls will celebrate its champions with a parade starting at Kootenai Fire and Rescue on Seltice Way to the high school for an assembly starting at 3 p.m.

5A: For De La Rosa, it’s his third straight state. He was second as a freshman.

“This was the least nervewracking of all my titles,” De La Rosa said. “In our wrestling room, you’re not judged on winning a state title.”

Miller was third as a sophomore in 2019.

Miller beat Jett Miller of Centennial 10-0 for his first title.

“I knew I had to push the pace the entire time and not give him anything,” Miller said.

“Ethan’s the kind of kid that’s a super-hard worker,” Reardon said. “He hasn’t been wrestling forever, and there was a span where he didn’t wrestle and then started again in middle school. But his work ethic has bridged that gap. He’s a testamet to if you put in the work, good things are going to happen.”

Other Post Falls placers include: freshman Zack Campbell (sixth at 98), junior Roddy Romero (second at 106), junior Ryan Graves (third at 113), senior Braxton Mason (fourth at 120), junior Lane Reardon (second at 126), junior Isaac Jessen (second at 132), junior Isaiah Laguna (third at 195) and junior Tyler Cook (fourth at 220).

Coeur d’Alene junior Drew Roberts loves to compete.

In the 138-pound championship, Roberts took control early and didn’t let up, notching a 18-3 win over Tyson Clark of Madison for his second state title, and first since transferring from University High in Spokane.

“I just knew I had to go out and wrestle to the best of my ability,” said Roberts, the nephew of Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat. “I’ve been doing a lot of training on my takedowns and working on wrestling through the end of the match. I wanted to just keep wracking up the points.”

Roberts won as a freshman at Crescent Valley High in Corvallis, Ore., then was third for University as a sophomore in 2019.

“It’s awesome being there with my family,” Roberts said. “I love wrestling and competing. To have my uncles (Jeff and Coeur d’Alene assitant coach Kelly Moffat) in my corner just seals the deal.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Gunner Giulio overwhelmed Luke Chapman of Eagle 10-4 for the 160-pound title.

“I felt like I was more prepared than last year,” Giulio said. “I just went out and wrestled with the pride in my last name and did what I needed to do.”

“Both Drew and Gunner controlled their matches,” Moffat said. “They were both just impressive all weekend.”

Other Coeur d’Alene placers include: sophomore Christian Paniagua (second at 98), senior Dom Jessos (fifth at 120), senior Hunter Schueller (fifth at 132), sophomore Mason Keough (fifth at 138), junior Nolan Randles (fourth at 152), junior Filip Mjertan (sixth at 195), junior Jackson Kohal (third at 285) and senior Dylan Franks (sixth at 285).

“Our kids wrestled great,” said Jeff Moffat, who coached Coeur d’Alene to back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. “I’ve got no complaints about our effort because our guys wrestled their tails off. A lot of years, 188 points wins it, and we placed as many kids as Post Falls. I was really happy for Hunter, who practiced two days the week of districts and had to battle with a broken ankle. Dom, who is a two-time state runner-up, I think the injury bug finally caught up to him.”

Lake City senior Owen Hughes used his knowledge of Skyview’s Josiah Lara at just the right time on Saturday.

In last year’s state championship match. Then again earlier this season, Lara beat Hughes in the quarterfinals of the Tri-State Invitational 2-0.

In this year’s 5A 285-pound title match, Hughes remembered.

“We kind of figured out that he wanted to slow down the match,” Hughes said. “We just tried to push the pace, and with it being in the state finals, I didn’t want to lose again.”

Hughes didn’t, holding off Lara 2-1 for his first state title. Hughes was also sixth as a sophomore.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Hughes said. “All of the sacrifice I’ve put in, it just feels amazing.”

“Owen wrestled the perfect match,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Tactically, he was really good. It was a great way to end the tournament.”

While Lake City junior Matthew Whitcomb had been familiar with his opponent in the 182-pound finals — Lewiston’s Reuben Thill — from earlier matches in the finals of the North Idaho Rumble and Region 1 tournament, his confidence came long before the tournament even started.

“Knowing I was the No. 1 seed really boosted my confidence for this weekend,” said Whitcomb, who beat Thill 12-5 for his first state title. “I just had to stick to my gameplan, and if I did that, I knew everything would work out.”

Other Lake City placers include: senior Caden Hess (second at 113), junior Porter Howard (fourth at 160), freshman Zach Macdonald (fifth at 98), freshman Blaine Leonard (fifth at 106), senior Mahlon Clark (fifth at 195) and senior Connor Dremann (fifth at 220).

“Our kids wrestled awesome,” Owen said. “They competed right to our expectations and really wrestled their butts off.”

4A: Colton Boettcher capped his high school career with a state championship at 170 for the Lakeland Hawks, who brought home a trophy with a fourth-place finish.

Boettcher did not allow a point to be scored on him in his four victories, capped by a pin of Zuriel Angulo of Vallivue late in the first round.

“I just went out and wrestled, and afterward my dad (Rich) said, ‘I don’t think you got scored on,” said Boettcher, who placed fourth last year at state. “I did a lot of wrestling last spring and summer, and that upped my confidence level.”

“He dominated everybody he wrestled” at state,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said.

Boettcher’s win also helped the Hawks bring home a trophy.

“I didn’t know at the time,” he said. “It just made it all the more sweeter.”

Boettcher, also a standout football player, says he wants to continue his athletic career in college — he just isn’t sure in which sport yet.

Alex Edelblute (126) and Ryan Quimby (160) each placed second for Lakeland. Rhonin Edwards (152) and Riley Siegford (138) each were third, and John White (182) was sixth.

Sandpoint’s lone placer was Tag Benefield, third at 220.

3A: Timberlake seniors Caleb Miller (160 pounds) and Joey Follini (182) claimed individual titles for the Tigers, who finished third in the 3A tournament.

Senior Isaiah Evans (132), senior Ethan Jerome (138) and sophomore James Billingsley finished third, senior Ray Knerr (220) fifth, and seniors Brayden Herbert (126), Josh Yanez (195) and sophomore Trevor Cady (sixth at 285).

Other area state champions include: Bonners Ferry junior Evan Barajas (126) and Kellogg senior Judson Hall (138).

2A: St. Maries junior Sam Martin was the top local finisher in the 2A tournament, finishing third.

St. Maries finished eighth with 96 points.

Other St. Maries placers include: junior Dylan Sotin (fourth at 113), sophomore Kyle Sibert (fourth at 195) and junior Delbert Lambson (fifth at 220).

Ririe won its sixth-straight 2A team title with 224 points.
