Northern Lakes ‘A’ team remains unbeaten in league

The Coeur d’Alene American Legion baseball program is suspending all activities for all of its teams until at least July 6 after individuals — a family member or player — affiliated with the program tested positive for COVID-19, the program announced on Saturday.

“Over the next week, we will evaluate the situation on a team-by-team basis to determine when we can safely resume playing baseball,” the Coeur d’Alene Legion Board of Directors announced in a release. Citing privacy laws, the board declined to be more specific as to who tested positive.

Coeur d’Alene’s Legion program fields teams at the AA, A, 16U, 14U and 13U levels.

“We are assisting in contacting individuals that may have been exposed and directing them to the Panhandle Health District,” the board said. “Panhandle Health District is conducting contact tracing with the positive individuals and anyone who was potentially exposed will be contacted.”

The health district recommends anyone who may have been in close contact with these individuals to self-isolate while waiting to be tested and while awaiting test results.

Northern Lakes, a Single-A program with players from Lakeland and Timberlake high schools, continued its season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Orofino.

The Senior Wood Bat Classic July 3-5 and Junior Wood Bat Classic July 10-12 were also canceled. Some of the teams in each tourney were scheduled to play in pods at Thorco Field.

Coeur d’Alene’s AA team was scheduled to travel to Kalispell for a doubleheader today, then visit Missoula on Monday. Both of those games have been canceled.

The AA Lums are next scheduled to play a doubleheader against Wilder BBC of Port Angeles, Wash., on July 8.

Northern Lakes 12-10

Orofino 1-0

OROFINO — Louis Powell went 3 for 4 with two doubles, drove in a run and scored three as the Mountaineers won the first game, which counted in the class A North Idaho League standings.

“Louis got after it early in the count,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “He was frustrated the last couple of games; he was hitting right at people. He did the same thing (today) he normally does — this time he found gaps.”

Jaret Taylor went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored in the opener for Northern Lakes (10-1, 5-0 NIL). He had an RBI double in the first inning, a run-scoring single in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. Jack McDonald had two hits, and Sam Pemberton delivered a two-run single in the fifth.

In the nonleague nightcap, McDonald went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Mountaineers. He hit a two-run single in the second and a run-scoring single in the third.

Taylor hit a solo homer in the third, and Colton Aragon, the regular catcher, got a turn on the mound and pitched a five-inning, four-hit shutout.

Northern Lakes takes to the road again on Tuesday, at Moscow for a doubleheader.
