Dog + cat + rifle = injury

A situation involving a prairie dog, a cat and a rifle resulted in an accidental gunshot wound.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Wednesday to a property in Athol, where a male had been walking with his adult brother with their .22 caliber single shot Crickett rifle when they spotted a prairie dog.

“The gun was handed to the younger brother so the older brother could grab the cat that was walking with them from chasing the prairie dog,” the KCSO Facebook post said. “The younger brother put too much pressure on the trigger and the rifle was not on safe.”

The round just grazed the victim’s left inner foot.

The juvenile was transported to Kootenai Health via private transport.

“Deputies completed report and provided some information about gun safety,” the post said.
