COEUR d’ALENE — Citing a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the community, Coeur d’Alene Public Schools on Thursday suspended all district or school-sponsored sports practices, sports camps, weight training and other student athletic activities at least until Monday, July 6.

“This pause in the summer schedule will give us time to monitor developments in coronavirus tracking, including the increase in cases among persons age 18 and younger, and evaluate the potential risk of exposure during team activities,” the Coeur d’Alene School District said in a news release. “In addition, we will conduct a deep cleaning of athletic facilities and equipment in recent use.”

Kootenai County saw its second-largest single-day jump in coronavirus cases when it increased by 17 to 169 on Thursday.

Spring sports seasons for area high schools were halted in mid-March. Some teams had competed in an event or two before the suspension, while others had yet to play. The spring sports season was officially canceled by the Idaho High School Activities Association in mid-April.

Preseason practice for fall sports is scheduled to begin on Aug. 10.
