Northern Lakes sweeps doubleheader at Silver Valley
Lums-Cardinals postponed
OSBURN — Jaret Taylor threw a no-hitter in the opener, and the Northern Lakes Mountaineers piled up 40 runs on 25 hits on the afternoon for a 23-0, 17-2 sweep of Silver Valley in Class A North Idaho League play at Morehouse Field in Osburn.
Taylor threw five no-hit innings in the mercy rule-shortened opener, walking only two while striking out 11. At the plate, Taylor went 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base, three runs scored and five RBIs in the opener.
“He was in command from the start. He attacked the zone, threw a ton of strikes ... he pitched phenomenal,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said of Taylor.
After closing out the opener with a 10-run fifth inning, the Mountaineers (3-0) continued their offensive attack in the second game, tallying six runs in the first inning. Jack McDonald scored three runs in each game, drove in four runs overall and stole three bases; Colton Aragon went 5-for-9 on the day with five runs scored and five RBIs; and Addison Balavage went 3-for-5 overall with three RBIs for Northern Lakes.
“After it took us a while to get going in our opener (on Sunday), we hit the ball really well all day,” Johnson said. “And we played well on defense; we made only one error behind Jaret (in game one) and none in the second game.”
Tony Stanziano had a double and RBI in the nightcap for Silver Valley (1-5).
The Mountaineers (3-0) return to action on Thursday night, facing the host Missoula Mavericks in a three-day tournament in Missoula, Mont.
