Big Sky to start Olympic sports later, still mulling football

FARMINGTON, Utah — The Big Sky Conference’s Presidents’ Council approved delaying the first date of competition for its Olympic sports during the fall 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference announced Friday afternoon.

Friday, Sept. 18 will serve as the first date of competition for the traditional fall sports of soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country, as well as the non-championship seasons for men’s and women’s tennis and softball. Men’s and women’s golf can compete starting on Monday, Sept. 14. Each member will determine whether any of its impacted non-conference contests will be rescheduled.

The competition start date for football will be assessed at a later date.

Big Sky institutions may continue with permissible athletics activities at their discretion while abiding by NCAA legislation, campus policies, and local and state regulations.

named to Maxwell Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA — Washington State junior running back Max Borghi was named to his third 2020 preseason watch list Friday, appearing on the 2020 Maxwell Award Watch List, The Maxwell Football Club announced.

Borghi is among the eight players from the Pac-12 Conference up for the award, presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football.

Last week, Borghi was named the 2020 Doak Walker Award Watch List, the award given to the nation’s top college running back and the 2020 Biletnikoff Award Watch List, the award given to the nation’s top receiver.
