The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office will deal with violations of the mask mandate approved by Panhandle Health District’s Board of Health “on a case by case basis.”
The order requires every person in Kootenai County to wear a face covering that covers the nose and mouth when in a public place where physical distancing can’t be maintained, with some exceptions.
By state law, violating the order is a misdemeanor offense that could result in a $1,000 fine or up to a year in jail, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued Friday.
“The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for enforcing the laws of the State of Idaho and Kootenai County,” the news release said.
The Sheriff’s Office will reportedly favor education over enforcement.
