LEGION BASEBALL: Tanner Vandever caps sweep by Northern Lakes
RATHDRUM — Tanner Vandever’s two-run single capped a seven-run sixth inning and ended the game on the 10-run rule as the Northern Lakes Mountaineers class “A” team beat the Spokane Crew 14-4 to complete the sweep in American Legion (independent) baseball Thursday at Lakeland High’s Terry Gorton Memorial Field.
Northern Lakes won the first game 4-2.
Vandever finished 2 for 3 with a run scored for Northern Lakes (21-6).
“Tanner does a good job putting the ball in play,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “He hit the ball hard, and found gaps.”
Leadoff hitter Jack McDonald went 3 for 4 with an RBI double in the fourth, and scored four runs.
In the first game, Jaret Taylor hit an RBI single in the second inning and Trevor Vandever added a run-scoring single in the third for Northern Lakes, which led 4-0 after three innings. Taylor also came on in relief with the bases loaded and two for the save.
“Especially the first game, I liked that we got after it early,” Johnson said. “The top half of our lineup did a good job getting us going early.”
Northern Lakes is scheduled to play host to the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “A” on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Lakeland High. Both North Idaho League foes are playing as independents after Legion officials canceled play in Area A (North Idaho) for the season on July 12.
