DISC GOLF: Person nabs pro title at Farragut State Park event
The inaugural Project Cutthroat disc golf tournament at Farragut State Park ended with a wire-to-wire winner.
First-round leader Jared Person of Coeur d’Alene fended off a late charge to win by one stroke over Jace Foster, one of two golfers to post the day’s lowest-round score. Person shot 1-under-par 66 for the day as well as the lowest round of the tournament in the first round, 63, to secure the one-shot win.
“I managed to scramble just enough,” Person said. “It was so hot, and I’m just not used to playing back-to-back days on a 10,000-foot-plus course.”
Even though he collected birdies on holes 4, 5 and 9 during the second round, he said he felt particularly proud of his play on the back nine, when he managed to make several par saves after fatigue caused some errant shots. Adding to the pressure was playing partner Ross Leu, who made a late charge after birdieing holes 13, 14 and 16 to trim four strokes from his deficit to Person. Leu eventually finished three strokes behind Person and placed third.
Foster said he was “excited” after sinking a 50-foot jump putt on the final hole to take second place by two strokes, the first time he’s placed in a tournament in the male professional open division. He shot 64 and shared the lowest round total for the second round with Zach Schweitzer.
In the age-restricted divisions, Raymond Tweedy won the MP40 division by two strokes over Charlie Walker, and Paul Stiller edged Brett Penney by one stroke in the MP50 division.
Person won $510 for his victory, Tweedy $400 and Stiller $235.
Tournament director Ben Squires said he felt great about how the two Project Farragut tournaments went this past weekend.
“We had great weather,” Squires said. “We got to show off the course we’ve been working on for the past month since the COVID restrictions were lifted. We had a great turnout.”
