LEGION BASEBALL: Manzardo, Childers lead Lums past Cannons

| July 17, 2020 1:02 AM

POST FALLS — Marcus Manzardo went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs, and Payton Childers was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Spokane Cannons 12-6 in Legion baseball Thursday at Sportsman’s Park.

“We hit the ball really well, played adequate defense,” Lums coach Paul Manzardo said. “Liam Paddack pitched well (seven strikeouts in four innings) ... we’re just happy we were able to keep playing.”

After Legion baseball in Area A (North Idaho) was shut down on Sunday due to COVID-19 cases among teams, Coeur d’Alene and some of the other Legion teams opted to continue as independents.

Sportsman’s Park was previously named Brett James Memorial Field, and was a cozy home to Prairie’s Legion team and the Post Falls High team years ago.

“They’ve moved the fences back, and made the fences taller,” Manzardo said.

Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to play the Northern Lakes “A” team today at 5:30 p.m. at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.
