Three youth organizations get big donation

The city of Rathdrum presented three $2,435 checks to local youth sports organizations last weekend at the 2020 North Idaho Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament.

An annual tradition since 2015, the tournament began after the city wanted to raise money for local groups and organizations that needed money.

The 18-hole scramble tournament was held June 20 at the Twin Lakes Village Golf Course and featured closest-to-the-pin and long drive challenges for men and women.

This year’s recipients were Lakeland Little League, Lakeland Junior Tackle and Lakeland Wrestling Club. They plan to use the money for sports equipment, field maintenance, uniform updates, and supplies.

Lakeland Little League recently received two scoreboards from the Coeur d’Alene Little League division and is excited to install those with the help of the Mayor’s Cup donation.

“We are going to use the money from the Mayor’s Cup to pay for the installation of those scoreboards at our field because our current boards do not work,” Lakeland Little League President Samantha Tuskan said. “This will have a huge impact on the youth sports organizations in Rathdrum.”

Lakeland Wrestling Club plans on using the donation to help purchase a new wrestling mat for its annual wrestling tournament and was thankful, said Larch McWatters.

For Lakeland Junior Tackle, this money will go a long way into helping children participate in the football program.

According to president of Lakeland Junior Tackle Shaun Tunnell, every year families struggling with finances can’t afford sports fees. This has never stopped LJT, which tries to provide scholarships to those children, paying for equipment and overall expenses.

“We really appreciate the city of Rathdrum and our mayor for really giving back to the community and giving us at Lakeland Junior Tackle this opportunity,” Tunnell said.

Mayor Vic Holmes, Rathdrum administrations, City Council and parks and recreation representatives make the final decision on who receives the donation. Past recipients include the North Idaho College Rathdrum campus, the Rathdrum Senior Center and Rathdrum Lions Club.
