Lawrence A. Jewett
SFC Lawrence A. Jewett was born Sept. 10, 1943, in Mount Vernon, Wash. As were his wishes, he died at his home in Spirit Lake, Idaho, on May 30, 2020. He was surrounded by his family and friends, and his beloved animals.
Larry leaves behind two daughters, Kristine Lindor of Mount Vernon, and Pamela Tillman of Topeka, Kan.; son-in-law, Kris Lindor; numerous nieces and nephews residing in Washington, Oregon and Kansas; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Of special mention is Larry’s best friend and caregiver, Jim Reinhart, who tirelessly cared for Larry during the last years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of two years, Leslie Jewett; his mother, Corrine Purves; and three brothers, Don, Mark and Steve.
Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964. He served two tours in Vietnam and earned the Army Commendation Medal. He was honored with the Navy Combat Aircrew Insignia, given for the first time to a non-Navy soldier, for more than 200 flight missions flown during the years between 1967 to 1972. He also received multiple letters of commendation and appreciation for his service. He was an Army recruiter toward the end of his military career, earning several commendations in that field as well.
During his recruiting career, Larry spent several years in Walla Walla, Wash., where he was an avid American saddlebred owner and trainer. He participated in many competitions, and earned several ribbons.
After retirement in 1984, Larry moved to Idaho, where his father-in-law taught him ironworking. He used that knowledge and his talent to contribute to many Spirit Lake businesses and public services, including the Spirit Lake Fire Department, where he designed and built the watering system for their lake boat which is still in use today. He also served on the Spirit Lake City Council.
During this time, Larry went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching certificate. A major surgery prevented him from continuing his education further.
Larry wished his ashes to be spread in Spirit Lake. There will be a military service held at the picnic area by the boat dock at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2020. All who wish to attend are welcome.
