Super Bowl logic for amateurs

| January 29, 2020 12:00 AM

Super Bowl Sunday is a few days away and it’s been a little low key on the promotion this year. For those who no longer have a dog in the fight the last two teams standing, Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, are up for game day fan grabs.

The Chiefs definitely have a lock on the underdog role, it was in 1970 when they won their last Super Bowl trophy. For reference, I was 18 years old and it was half a century ago. I’m thinking they will be bringing the will to win big time.

The West Coast 49ers would be the logical team to cheer for in this part of the world. Since my good friend Katie Brodie’s big brother John Brodie is an iconic 49ers quarterback, playing 17 seasons in the NFL and I’ve met him, I’m leaning that way. In 1970 he was the league’s MVP. John is still bigger than life and a generous sharer of stories who also gives world-class hugs.

As you can see I enjoy the hoopla of the Super Bowl despite knowing very little about football. The logic I apply to choosing my game day team is circular at best. Luckily if I wear red, I’ll have all of the bases covered. And yes, that’s mixing sport metaphors.

If the Seahawks played in every Super Bowl it would certainly make life simpler on the first Sunday in February. But what’s not to love about a day dedicated to consuming a week’s worth of carbs, calories and cholesterol and some of the most outrageous and creative television commercials? Oh, and football.
