Courtesy photo On Jan. 19 Mikalah Shouse, 12, of Technique Gymnastics made her comeback to the sport she loves. Less than a year ago in practice she suffered a severe traumatic wrist and open elbow fracture dislocation that required emergency surgeries at Shriners Hospital in Spokane and left her with an inability to use or feel her ring and pinky finger with the unknown use of her elbow and wrist. She was warned that her gymnastics career was likely over. After almost a year of hard work and occupational therapy with Bob Swider, she was able to return to practice. Her coaches, Stephanie Fritts and Sam Goodman, worked with her to modify skills that she needed help with since her hand function and feeling was not normal. Then she was dealt another blow — she needed to have ear surgery to repair a ruptured eardrum. Thanks to surgeon Chad McCormick, she had a successful ear drum graft but had to be out of gymnastics for 2 months. Once she came back she was able to hear better and her balance had improved. She had her first meet on Jan. 19 and not only came back but came back with amazing scores and placements which was even more impressive since she was scheduled for another ear surgery the next morning. That surgery was also successful and she now is back in full force determined to write her own ending and not be defined by an injury and be with her team family at Technique Gymnastics.
