Cardinals tie Clackamas, but lose on tiebreaker

| January 25, 2020 12:00 AM

OREGON CITY, Ore. — It was one of those duals that North Idaho College coach Mike Sebaaly said his team could have — and should have — won.

NIC, ranked third in this week’s NJCAA poll, lost to fifth-ranked Clackamas 22-21 on Friday, with the Cougars gaining the edge on criteria on pins (2-1) after the dual was tied at 21-all.

“It was a back and forth dual,” Sebaaly said. “Nobody got too far in front of the other one.”

The dual, which came down to the 285 pound match between Cohle Feliciano of NIC and Tommy Mommer of Clackamas, won by Feliciano 8-3, which earned the Cardinals three team points. Following the match, Clackamas — which led the dual 22-18 headed into the final match — lost a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

That being said ...

“We needed a pin, and had a couple of shots at it late in that match,” Sebaaly said. “But we lost a match at 184 and another at 197, then took a major decision in a match we needed to win.”

Isaac Lopez (133 pounds) won by pin, Salvador Silva by major decision at 149 for NIC. Navarro Nanpuya (165) and Alan Badley (174) also had wins for NIC.

“Isaac had a really big pin for us,” Sebaaly said. “Sal beat a really good kid and was trying to get bonus points and got aggressive. For Cohle, that’s a nice big win for him. We’ve been closing the gap against those guys. We’re excited to get ready for regionals and nationals.”

Clackamas beat NIC 22-20 in a dual in Coeur d’Alene on Nov. 22. NIC lost to Clackamas 34-3 and 44-3 last season.

“When you see a Clackamas kid, you know you’re going to see an All-American,” Sebaaly said. “We’re a little banged up, but going to keep preparing for the end of the year.”

NIC (15-3) faces Southwestern Oregon and Umpqua today in Roseburg, Ore.
