A young star in North Idaho has been recognized as one of the brightest in the Gem State.

Jim Kinnard, 19, of Coeur d'Alene, was named winner of Idaho's Brightest Star Award in the student category Jan. 15 during a ceremony in Boise. Kinnard, a 2019 Lake City High School graduate, is an intern in the Project SEARCH high school transition program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"I liked that I was able to be at the event in Boise and receive the award because I like to volunteer for my community and my school and help people out," Kinnard said Thursday.

Kinnard has been an active volunteer and advocate for the special needs community for six years. In 2019, he volunteered 130 hours with more than 20 organizations and events, such as the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon, Idaho Special Olympics and Team Hoyt CDA, a nonprofit that encourages individuals with disabilities and their families to get out and run with the team.

"As a family we volunteer often, and we are thrilled that Jim does his part," said proud mom Jann Kinnard. "So many volunteers over the years have made positive impacts on Jim. It’s great to see him on the giving side. (He's) had great friends and community support workers who have volunteered alongside him. Thanks to all the organizations that have welcomed Jim and supported his efforts."

The Idaho's Brightest Stars award ceremony was hosted by Serve Idaho: The Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism.

The Brightest Stars program celebrates outstanding dedication and accomplishments of Idaho's volunteers. Honorees are nominated by fellow Idahoans for their civic contributions and volunteer spirit.

Other local nominees included: Lilian Smith, student; Kootenai Environmental Alliance, nonprofit/civic organization; Maureen Westfall, individual 55+; and Out of the Shadows Theater, nonprofit/civic organization.
