'Fun Home' now on stage at Lake City Playhouse

| January 24, 2020 12:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — "Fun Home" is now playing at the Lake City Playhouse.

This five-time award-winning musical is adapted from Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic novel of the same name.

Upon the unexpected death of her father, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. It tells the story of Bechdel's own coming of age, her tense relationship with her father and family and her struggles to make sense of life.

This unforgettable and groundbreaking show was the first Broadway musical to feature a lesbian protagonist. It explores the haunting pull of memory and the power it has to alternately destroy or shape our identity.

Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her closeted gay father’s hidden desires.

"Fun Home" is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

“This show is a beautiful coming of age story," director Brooke Wood said, "one that makes us think about how we affect those we love. One that celebrates growing into ourselves and learning to let go."

Lake City Playhouse has assembled an amazing local cast to bring this memorable show to Coeur d'Alene, with each actor bringing full focus and talent to a score that goes from melancholy to zany in an instant.

This show contains mature content and adult themes.

"Fun Home" runs through Feb. 2. Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at Lake City Playhouse, 1320 Garden Ave.
